I have over a decade's worth of experience working with children and young people aged 5 -18, as a teacher, workshop facilitator, volunteer and now counsellor. Children are affected by life's difficulties just like adults - they experience grief, sadness, loneliness, anger and anxiety. The difference is that they are still learning how to put those feelings into words. So when I work with children, I bring a rich toolbox of play and creative activities, including games, painting, collage and crafting. These can help children focus on something while they talk, easing feelings of anxiety about 'what to say'.
I have counselled children facing a range of difficulties, including anger, bereavement, bullying and issues related to neurodivergence and developmental diagnoses. They are given the same care and attention that I would give to an adult client, and I work with them to help them communicate their feelings and needs to the trusted adults in their lives.
