I have worked with young people aged 5 -18 for over a decade, as a teacher, workshop facilitator, bereavement support worker, and now counsellor. Children are affected by life's difficulties just like adults - they experience grief, sadness, loneliness, anger and anxiety. The difference is that they are still learning how to put those feelings into words. So when I work with children, I bring a rich toolbox of play and creative activities, including games, painting, collage and crafting. These can help children focus on something while they talk, easing any anxiety and building a safe, supportive space to process emotions.
I have counselled children facing a range of difficulties, including anger, bereavement, anxiety, bullying and issues related to neurodivergence and developmental diagnoses. They are given the same care and attention that I would give to an adult client, and I work with them to help them communicate their feelings and needs to the trusted adults in their lives.
